Susan Jones writes romantic drama with a touch of humour, and historical sagas as Lydia King. She lives in North Warwickshire, and loves walking through the beautiful woodlands where she lives, and gardening and reading are her pastimes.

Filler items/reader’s letters

There was a time when you could always find a magazine that published filler items. I started off writing a letter to Woman’s Realm. We had some giant thistles in the garden. I sprayed them gold and silver and used them as Christmas decorations. That gave me my first cheque for my writing £5. It was the start of having lots of little snappy bits of news published in a whole range of magazines.

I’m on a mission to see if we can still get these fillers accepted and are there any magazines that bother to pay writers’ for them anymore? Maybe with Twitter and Facebook, they have a ready harvest of fillers for free.

What do you think? Do you miss the fillers, or the steady flow of income they used to provide? Or have I forgotten about them. Hobby magazines are full of bits and pieces, I’ll let you know how I go on.

    I used to write loads of fillers. While I was waiting for my first fiction sales it was really motivating to learn people were willing to pay for something I’d written.

      Yes I am on a mission to see if anyone still wants these- in between writing fiction and non fiction 😊

    Yes – I had a few fillers published too before the short stories! Think there might be a few magazines still take them, like Yours, and Readers Digest still pay for various anecdotes.

    Yes, I miss them. Do people still pay for these? The last one I had published was a tip to shake your ’empty’ toner cartridge and keep using it, rather than putting in a new one. You can get dozens more pages out of it, even when the machine says you need a new one.
